The Avengers Is Gonna Be SOOO Worth It

I've been excited about this since...well, since someone made me wait until the end of Iron Man and Nick Fury/Sam Jackson badassed his way through the final scene. It's a super sweet trailer, and May can't come soon enough. Any chance to watch RDJ aka Tony Stark being a "genius billionaire playboy philanthropist", and I'm in. It doesn't hurt that there are some prime pieces of eye candy on both sides of the aisle (ScarJo, natch). But comic book worshippers, what are your thoughts on Ruffalo as the Hulk? I'm still on the fence.

Gangster Movies I'll Always Drop Everything to Watch

The Godfather Saga (I'm just going to combine 1 & 2, since I consider them two parts of one film)
This film is the subject of a series of lectures in a class I took on race relations in cinema. I think mainly the prof wanted us to watch a cool movie that everyone should see, but with an eye toward looking at how simple and accepted racism was in the first half of the 20th century. It's pretty interesting once you get to the second film flashbacks with Vito and you see how Italians (and immigrants) were treated in turn-of-the-century New York, and how the mafia was re-created in America under the capitalist business model. But beyond that, this is the gangster film to end all gangster films, and pretty much every other one has to be held to the "Coppola Standard." (I'm pretty sure Francis can't even be held up to the "Coppola Standard" nowadays...maybe his wine?)

Casino
"This guy could fuck up a cup of coffee."
Kevin Pollak - WTFILOVEYOU.
Martin Scorcese does an amazing job turning "true" events into compelling kickass dramas. The Departed and Casino are both based on actual real-life events, which makes me want to splatter someone's brains all over a wall and/or break their knees. The scene where De Niro gives a con man an especially twisted ultimatum might be my favorite gruesome hand-smashing scene of all time. Of ALL Time.

File:American Gangster poster.jpg

American Gangster
*Based on real life.
While this isn't an oft-quoted line, I absolutely LOVE how Denzel says "Someone call an amberlance!!" when Bumpy is having a heart attack in the electronics store. I love how Denzel is so badass, he walks up to his nemesis in broad daylight, shoots the guy straight in the face and then takes back his money. Lesson: Don't fuck with Denzel. Ever. Ridley Scott kills it in the best way possible.

Goodfellas
*Based on real life.
"I'm funny how? Like a clown, I amuse you?"
I'm nostalgic for a time that I never lived in. I always have been. Gangster films fulfill some part of that nostalgia, in that mainly they take place way before I was born, and people seem to get away with shit that doesn't seem possible these days. The Sopranos showed us a post-modern gangster family, but what I really want is to see a time when the mafia acted as protectors of their communities when the cops couldn't (or wouldn't) do anything. It's romantic and idealized and completely unrealistic, because they weren't really good people, but neither were pirates, and I love pirates.

The Departed
"Give me a cranberry juice."
"What are you on your period?"
I said this to a friend recently at a bar, and for a second, I was actually hoping he might smash me in the head with his glass and begin kicking me in the ribs. I SO want to be a gangster. I can't say it's my favorite gangster film because I'm such a fan of The Godfather, but this one is a very close second. A modern-day gangster film, but this time, they're IRISH! TWIST! The Dropkick Murphys simply kill the intro, and every time I hear it, I want to murder someone in the face.

Blow
"I'm really great at what I do, Dad. I mean I'm really great at what I do."
This isn't technically a gangster film, but I'm hard-pressed to put it in a different category, since it shared many of the same tropes and plot points as a gangster movie, including a downer ending after the hero goes straight. He thought he was out, except for ONE LAST JOB. Johnny Depp is amazing in this film, and I love how easily he goes from being a surfer slacker to a drug boss. *My love for Johnny extends to every single movie he's ever made, but this might be one of my favorites. (Cruz and Depp are pairing back up again after 10 years in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and I'm excited for the fourth installment of the most fun film franchise based on a theme park ride ever made.)

*Also based on real life.
Johnny Depp, again. But add Al Pacino, not as the boss, but as an underling, and you've got a classic good guy gets in too deep and can't get out story. Donnie's a federal agent, but parades around like a slick goombah and when he tries to make it all right, well...

So....what do you think? Honorable mention goes to...Public Enemies? While these are just the gangster films that I'll dropkick a small armadillo to watch, there are certainly many others out there that deserve your attention. Check out Listverse's Top 20 Gangster Films of All Time and see what they picked. What got left out? How do you define a "gangster" film?

Miike Snow Puts Happiness in Your Ears

Miike Snow, a duo from Sweden, recently popped up in my musical rotation and I immediately went forth trying to find MORE. Mainly known for their remixes of Passion Pit, Vampire Weekend (below), and Kings of Leon, they released an eponymous album of original songs in 2009, including "Animal" (played on "Gossip Girl") and "Black and Blue". It's one of those bands that you know you have to hear again and again. Visit their website for more vids, music and more. Enjoy!

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Trailer

This looks amazing. WETA has created some amazing creatures, including Gollum from Lord of the Rings, King Kong, and the Na'vi from Avatar, but the apes and monkeys in this trailer look even more real than the ones you see at the zoo. There are tons of articles and posts out about this, but I just wanted to share the trailer. Also, James Franco really likes to do things.

Scala & Kolacny Brothers

Scala & Kolacny Brothers Choir

Check out the piece NPR did this morning on Scala & Kolacny Brothers. Originally a classical women's choir from Belgium, they switched to rock covers about a decade ago and found a niche performing toned-down versions of indie-rock songs like "With or Without You" by U2, "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, and many more.

If you saw The Social Network trailer, you heard their haunting version of "Creep" by Radiohead.

They recently performed at SXSW and I have a feeling we'll be hearing a lot more about them this year.

Who Doesn't Love Aaron Sorkin?

I love Aaron Sorkin.

If you missed 30 Rock last week, stop what you're doing and go watch it now.

If you're a fan of The West Wing, you'll notice something familiar in this scene between Tina Fey's Liz Lemon and Aaron Sorkin. The jokes are so quick that you might miss them, but I especially appreciated the Studio 60 reference. Enjoy!

Wye Oak's "Civilian"

Wye Oak, an indie folk rock group from Baltimore, is about to make your Monday.

With a sound similar to Florence + the Machine, and a build-up in this song that pulls you slowly in and then smacks you in the face, I'm loving this duo from MD.

Their song "Civilian" comes off of their 2011 album of the same name. Follow them on Twitter and check out their website for news and tour dates.

I just want to meet this person...

George Carlin's "Last Words"

George Carlin, one of the greatest comedians ever, passed away in 2008, but his last words remain with us. Tony Hendra started working with Carlin on his memoirs almost 20 years ago, and in Last Words, published in 2009, gives us the insight into Carlin that has only been hinted at in his HBO specials, appearances on The Tonight Show, and his previous works.

I've read this book about three times over the past year, and there's always something that grabs me every time I pick it up. It's funny and irreverent as you might expect, but humble and honest and sweet. It makes me regret not being alive when Carlin was out pushing the boundaries of decency and comedy at the height of his fame. Every time I watch an HBO special or re-read his books, or even watch Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure for the hundredth time, I appreciate his way with words and how he uses them. He understands just how important and how un-important words are to us.

One of my favorite passages from Last Words is re-printed below. It's one of the best descriptions of Los Angeles I've ever read, because I have the same feeling when I wake up every morning.

"What I remember most about the ambience of Hollywood was this amazing morning feeling. This promise of wide-open possibility. Something about the way the air smelled. And tasted good - and no, this is not a smog joke. There was a goldenness about the atmosphere. Even with all the traffic, a kind of quiet, a peace free of hustle and agitation. You felt safe but at the same time able to have different dreams every day. Or picture a hundred futures."
Pick up the book, check it out from the library, or read it on your kindle, but do yourself a favor and take a look inside the mind of a genius.

Rebecca Black's "Friday" Remix

In honor of the end of the week, I'm sharing a much better version of Rebecca Black's "Friday" single.

GOOD: Kissing

As a follow-up to my previous post about the science of kissing, I wanted to share this video produced by GOOD. The video shares facts about the benefits of kissing, why certain cultures share kisses, and our biological reactions to kissing, backed up by some of the most iconic movie kisses ever. Take a look.

Some facts:

About 90% of the world's cultures kiss.

In the middle ages, illiterates could seal legal deals with an "X" and a kiss, which is how the kiss got its "X" signature.

The science of kissing is called philematology.

When people kiss, they exchange between 10 million and 1 billion bacteria.

AND...

Armageddon is a fantastic movie.

What is GOOD?
"GOOD is a collaboration of individuals, businesses, and nonprofits pushing the world forward. Since 2006 we've been making a magazine, videos, and events for people who give a damn."
I'm really interested in this company, they basically work to help businesses improve their corporate social responsibility, and they always have great ideas. They started GOOD Projects in 2010, and have worked with Pepsi, IBM, Toyota and Starbucks to name a few. (Click the links to check out their projects.)

Follow them on Twitter and check out their website.

XOXO

Things I Love: Pure Moods Volume 1

If you spent your summers watching MTV and daytime soap operas when you were younger, you probably memorized the order of certain CD commercials' songs, like the TimeLife music collection. You may only know the chorus to these songs, or just a snippet, and may not even recognize the song out of context.

One of my favorite commercials also ended up being one of my favorite purchases EVER - Pure Moods, Vol. 1.

"Imagine a world where time drifts slowly...a world where music carries you away. Experience Pure Moods...the perfect soundtrack for your way of life. Direct from Europe, this multi-platinum collection has won the hearts of millions. Set adrift with the timeless pleasures of Tubular Bells...or take a trip into the unknown with The X-Files Theme. No other collection gives you the feeling of Pure Moods."

So true.

Lord of the Rings is Such a Tease : Blu-ray Box Set

This was announced the other day and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I've been on the Amazon alert list for this for almost a year since the theatrical versions were released on Blu-ray last April. Now you can pre-order the extended version, but they are still saying it won't be released until 2012. At least seeing the box set design makes it seem like it will actually happen, and that glorious day will be one of the happiest days of my life.

On a side note, I heard the theme music randomly the other day and tears actually welled up in my eyes. These films are by far the best things in cinema ever made. Haven't seen them yet? Don't. Wait until they all come out next year on Blu-ray extended edition. That's the real way to watch them. In fact, join me for the Weekend of Warriors where we'll watch all three films plus all of the extras in two days.

The Original "Love The Way You Lie" by Skylar Grey

I'm a big supporter of people with awesome names and this one kicks some ass. Skylar Grey helped compose "Love the Way You Lie" by Eminem and featuring Rihanna and was nominated for a Grammy in the Song of the Year category. Her demo version of this song is a lot more soulful and smooth, so give it a listen. You can compare it to the Eminem version here.

Fast Five: Vin Diesel AND Dwayne Johnson - OH HELL YEAH!

What are your plans for April 29th?

Fast Five comes out then and if you have any sense you'll be pre-ordering your tickets for opening night. The teaser trailer that came out a few weeks ago was amazing but definitely not enough for me. The new trailer below just literally kicked me in the face with awesome, especially the last shot which I imagine will be one of those Expendables moments where everyone in the theater goes "OHHHHSHIT!" This movie is everything anyone wants in a film : explosions, hot guys/girls, fast cars, and what looks to be the most epic fight scene ever between Vin Diesel and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Sexy times a billion.

A Romantic Song with a Weird Music Video

This is one of my favorite love songs, sung by the incredibly cheesy Lionel Richie. I love his voice, the slow rhythm, and the RIDICULOUS plot to this music video. Apparently this song gives men the courage to propose, so maybe give it a listen if you're feeling a little reticent to pop the question. Let Lionel make your Valentine's Day special and/or creepy depending on how you interpret this video.

Valentine's Day Surprise! Barbie and Ken are Officially Back Together

Image from EW.com
Barbie has officially changed her Facebook status to "In A Relationship" just in time for the sweetest holiday of all.
According to Mattel, who commented on Ken and Barbie's widely-publicized 2004 breakup after 43 years of non-marital bliss:
"People were devastated and we made the evening news and it was crazy. More recently, when people saw them together again on the set of Toy Story 3, people were really pushing for them to get back together again. We got a lot of formal petitions from brand fans, Barbie fan groups, asking for them to get back together."
To publicize the couple's reuniting, Mattel is releasing a new product today, a Barbie and Ken gift set for $5!

The Science of Kissing Explained

In honor of Valentine's Day

A new book called The Science of Kissing takes a look at - you guessed it - kissing. Why do humans kiss each other? It seems like a natural part of affection, but author and researcher Sheril Kirshenbaum says that it's a combination between innate and learned behavior. It's a pretty interesting study, and it's now at the top of my book wishlist.

Far East Movement Moves Me

The Far East Movement just released a super 8-style video for their latest hit "Rocketeer" and it completely rocks. There are bands that make you wanna move, and bands that make you wanna sing along, and they do both. The song from the video titled "LA Dreamer Short Film" is a toned-down version of their pop single. I love LA bands and artists that embrace the reality and dream of this amazing melting pot of a city, so give them a listen, and be quick about it.

A quote about the video from the Los Angeles Times article:
"When we did the song Rocketeer off our 'Free Wired' album, it was inspired by how we grew up in Downtown LA as LA Dreamers living on a dream and never knowing where it would take you. We wanted to paint a portrait of where we live, from where we started, to the free wired mashed up community of dreamers that make up LA."

Watch the video below and then listen to the original to see which one you like the best.

Bridgestone Makes Me Laugh My Own Laugh, and NOBODY Makes Me Laugh My Own Laugh

Bridgestone Reply All Commercial

Like you, I watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. I only follow USC Football, and once it's over, I have no interest in NFL whatsoever. (Although as a side note, I do always root for Trojans on NFL teams, but there are so many now that they are more likely playing against each other.)

It's rare that a commercial actually makes me laugh out loud, but this one kept me going all the way to the end, and even during the rewatch I cracked up. My favorite parts: the constant screaming, the coffee on the laptop, and the camper in the woods. So enjoy, if you haven't seen it, re-enjoy if you have.

UPDATE: There's an extended version of this commercial that you can watch below. Still makes me laugh.

Things That Make Me Happy - Smooth Voices

There's something about a smooth voice that makes my ears happy. It's like drinking an ice-cold Coca-Cola on a hot day, or when you see a ray of sunlight coming through the clouds. There are those voices that make a song seem like the cold side of the pillow, refreshing and relaxing and perfect, right when you need it. At times it doesn't even matter what the song is about, or what the lyrics are saying, just that smooth clear tone that makes you want to listen to the song on repeat. I'm not just talking about my favorite artists. These are a few of my favorite voices in music. What are yours?

Michael Buble
Michael Buble - "Feeling Good" (from 2005's It's Time)

The World Would Be More Interesting If Zombies Existed

Zombie Virus Fund

"No more worrying about work or which movie to watch. Daily survival would be all that matters. And we’d be happier for it."

We estimate that £1 billion is needed to develop a zombie virus and make this a reality. Help us reach this target by donating £2 to Amnesty International using the link below. If we reach the target, we’ll ask for our money back and develop the virus. If not, they can keep it.

This is the best idea I've ever heard.

I Feel Unmotivated

This is a good message for employers. Studies have found that money is not necessarily a primary motivator for employees' performance, nor is it a good indicator of employee satisfaction.

One of the reasons I love companies that value employee input and innovation is that they pay their employees enough money so that it isn't a factor for them. They love their jobs because they are stimulated by making a significant contribution and the reward comes from recognition and putting a value on creativity. Google does this, as do many other inspirational corporations.

This video is about 10 minutes long, but worth the watch. The animation is really amazing, too!

I found this video on I Feel Unmotivated, which is a good site to get a little daily inspiration when you're feeling like you can't finish that assignment or need a bit of motivation for life.
